WHAT I DO: I specialize in helping individuals learn to manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in order to improve their personal and professional lives.
WHY IS EMOTION MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT: All our judgments and decisions have a cognitive and emotional component. Some cognitive processes (e.g. distorted or obsessive thoughts) and some emotional states (e.g., fear, anxiety, anger, jealousy, and sadness) can negatively impact our personal and professional lives. They can affect our ability to learn new skills, make good decisions or achieve goals, limit our capacity to understand and lead other people, and prevent us from communicating effectively with others.
The Importance of Emotion Management in Leadership
In a workplace dominated by rational thinking, the role of emotions in decision-making, communication, and action, has often been neglected. In order to be an effective leader, you must engage in social interactions that are governed by corporate policies and display rules, and you need to be competent at influencing others.
A comprehensive and skill-building emotion management approach can help you to achieve some of the following:
- recognizing your own emotional states
- understanding how your thoughts and feelings affect your behavior, decisions, performance, and interpersonal relationships
- making decisions and engaging in behavior that lead to desirable outcomes
- expressing your emotions through assertiveness and effective communication skills that maximize cooperation and minimize conflict
- managing your impulses and behavior
- understanding the thoughts and emotional states of others and addressing their emotional concerns.
- assisting others in achieving their goals and managing their behavior
By cultivating these competencies or skills, you can become a more effective leader and create positive, productive, and long-lasting relationships that lead to success.
